Hikes and Walks

For those who love to explore on foot, Piran and its immediate surroundings offer a variety of scenic hikes and walks that showcase the natural beauty and cultural richness of the area.

Some of the trails mentioned are more suited for walks, while others can be considered hikes:

Walks:

Piran City Walks

Wander through the narrow streets and historic squares of Piran itself. Take a self-guided walking tour to discover the town’s medieval architecture, charming churches, and vibrant local culture. Don’t miss the climb to the top of the bell tower at St. George’s Parish Church for a spectacular view of the town and the coastline, as well as the nearby walls atop the hill.

Difficulty: Wandering through the narrow streets and historic squares of Piran is more of a pleasant cultural/romantic walk than a hike, although “climbing” up the church hill and the area beyond, will leave many of you huffing.

Coastal Pathways

Stroll along the stunning coastal walkways that connect Piran with the nearby town of Portorož. These well-maintained paths offer breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and are perfect for leisurely walks or invigorating strolls.

Difficulty: These are generally flat and well-maintained, making them ideal for leisurely walks rather than strenuous hikes.

Hikes:

The Parenzana Trail

One of the most popular trails in the region, the Parenzana is a 130 km long bike and hiking trail that follows the route of a former narrow-gauge railway. Starting from Trieste in Italy, the trail passes through Piran and continues to Poreč in Croatia. This trail offers a mix of coastal and inland scenery, with plenty of opportunities to explore historical sites along the way. It is ideal for those looking for a longer, more strenuous hike.

Difficulty: While it can be walked, the length and varied terrain make it suitable for a longer, more strenuous hike or bike ride.
Most suitable as: a hike or a bike ride

Sečovlje Salina Nature Park

Explore the unique landscape of the Sečovlje Salt Pans on foot. This nature park features a network of walking paths that take you through the historic salt pans, where you can learn about traditional salt-making and enjoy the tranquility of this protected area. For a more extended exploration, it can also be part of a light hike.

Difficulty: Exploring the salt pans can involve longer walks, but it can also be part of a light hike if you cover more ground within the park.
Most suitable as: a walk, or a light hike at best

Strunjan Landscape Park

For a more challenging hike, head to Strunjan Landscape Park. The park features steep cliffs, lush vegetation, and panoramic views of the sea. The trail to the Strunjan Cross offers one of the best viewpoints in the area, where you can see all the way to Trieste on a clear day.

Difficulty: This area offers more challenging trails with steep cliffs and longer routes, making it suitable for hiking.

Conclusion:

These hikes and walks offer something for everyone, from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the scenic beauty, learn about the local history, or simply get some fresh air and exercise, Piran’s trails and pathways are sure to delight.

A pleasant footpath/cycling path

Walking along Parenzana is a great experience if you are visiting the Slovenian coast in spring or in autumn – summer may be a bit too hot. Parenzana is a cycling path or a footpath linking the towns on the coast and also inland. As this was previously a railway route, there are also a few tunnels along the way, only adding to the experience, especially for the children. Most of the path is covered with asphalt, so it’s suitable for cyclists as well!

Fun and gorgeous cycling path

We loved Parenzana trail. We cycled along the Parenzana during an entire day and enjoyed every single bit of it. The landscapes that you will see are diverse and gorgeous: views of Izola, vineyards, the sea, … You even get to go through tunnels. You can also leave it to take another trail to get to Piran. A must-see if you stay in Slovenia. Enjoy!
